PAS MILESTONES
The 1980s
  • A group of nurses met to discuss the problems faced by their colleagues with drug or alcohol problems, including limited treatment options, public licensure sanction and lack of professional and peer support
  • Incorporated as N.U.R.S.E.S. of Colorado—Nurses United for Recovery, Support, and Education, Successfully Established a clear mission: dedicated to quality, accessible prevention and intervention services in workplaces and communities, focusing on substance abuse and related issues
  • Awarded a $9,500 contract from Colorado Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division to provide peer EAP services to nurses in the Denver/Boulder area
  • Received five-year grant from The Colorado Trust to expand peer EAP services statewide
  • Collaborated with the Colorado Nurses Association to draft legislation to provide an alternative to discipline program for nursing
  • Began a partnership with the Colorado Pharmacist Association and the Colorado Pharmacist Recovery Network


The 1990s

  • Collaborated with CNA in identifying resources for nurses struggling with issues in the workplace such as grievances, professional practice concerns, disability and unemployment

1991

  • Awarded the contract from the State Board of Pharmacy to provide case management services for the Pharmacy Peer Health Assistance Diversion Program that was signed into law
  • Awarded the four-year contract for the State Board of Nursing Diversion Program
  • Sponsored a national conference held in Denver for healthcare professionals with a grant from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention

1993

  • Awarded the Colorado Board of Dental Examiners Diversion Program contract to provide case management services to licensed dentists

1994

  • Name change to Peer Assistance Services, Inc. to better reflect the work of the agency

1998

  • Awarded Department of Corrections contract to provide the western parole region TASC program based in Grand Junction. The Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities program provides case management services to parolees with substance abuse histories.

2000

  • Awarded DOC contract to provide the northeast TASC program with offices in Westminster and Greeley
  • Received a Drug-Free Communities grant from the Department of Justice

2001

  • Awarded the contract for the southeast TASC program with offices in Colorado Springs and Pueblo
  • ADAD funding enabled PAS to continue workplace prevention services, provide peer EAP services to underserved healthcare workers, promote Drug-Free Workplace services and provide EAP support to small businesses

2003

  • Developed partnerships with Concerned Colorado Veterinarians and Colorado Lawyers Helping Lawyers
  • Awarded contract from the DOC to provide the Mile High TASC program with offices in Denver and Englewood, enabling PAS to provide TASC services statewide

2004

  • Celebrated 20 years of service with an Awareness Gala at the Donald R. Seawell Grand Ballroom in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts

2005

  • First Annual FASD prevention Fun Run
  • Initiated mentoring program, Adams County Connections
  • Implemented first annual all-TASC training in partnership with the Department of Corrections Office of Rehabilitation Programs
  • Awarded Paul D. Coverdell Drug-Free Workplace grant from the US Small Business Administration to expand Colorado small business services
